With AC charging, the car's own onboard charger converts household AC power into DC for the battery, so the speed is capped by the onboard charger, commonly 7.2 kW or 11 kW, and by your electricity supply. It is the slow, cheap way to charge, usually overnight at home or at work; 11 kW needs a three-phase connection.
