Both hold a speed you set. Ordinary cruise control does not react to traffic, so you must brake when you catch up with a slower vehicle, which switches it off. Adaptive cruise uses radar or a camera to slow down and speed up to keep a set gap to the vehicle ahead, and stop-and-go versions can come to a halt and move off again. Adaptive cruise is far more usable on busy Indian highways.
