A locking differential can be locked so that both wheels on an axle turn together at the same speed, whatever the grip under each. Off road this keeps the car moving when one wheel is in the air or on mud; it is unlocked again for normal driving because a locked axle resists turning.
Worth having only if you plan real off-roading; most buyers never need one.
