Torque is the twisting force the engine produces, and it decides how strongly the car pulls from low speed without changing gear. Power is torque multiplied by engine speed, and it decides how hard the car keeps accelerating at higher speeds and its top speed. For relaxed city and hill driving, plenty of low-speed torque matters most; for fast highway overtaking, power matters more.
