A torque converter automatic uses a fluid coupling instead of a clutch to pass power from the engine to a set of gears that change automatically. It moves off and shifts smoothly and copes well with stop-start traffic, but is usually a little less fuel efficient than a manual or CVT. It is the gearbox in most SUVs and luxury cars.
