Four-wheel drive, or 4x4, usually means a system built for rough terrain, with a transfer case that the driver engages and often a low-range gear set for steep or slow off-road driving. The Thar, Jimny, Scorpio N 4x4 and Fortuner 4x4 work this way.
Choose 4WD with low range if you will drive broken hill tracks, sand or deep mud; for wet roads AWD is enough.
