Both can drive all four wheels. In cars sold in India, AWD usually means a system that works by itself, often driving one axle and sending power to the other when a wheel slips, with no low range; it suits wet roads, gravel and hill-station trips. 4WD or 4x4 usually means a driver-selected system with a transfer case, 2H/4H/4L modes and low range for steep, rocky or muddy tracks, as on the Thar, Jimny and Fortuner 4x4. SAE's J1952 standard treats both as kinds of all-wheel drive, so check the spec sheet for 'low range' or '4L' if you plan real off-roading. axler8's data stores both as AWD/4WD.
