A CVT has no fixed gears: a belt or chain runs between two pulleys that change size, giving a smooth, unbroken range of ratios. It is very smooth and efficient in city driving; under hard acceleration the engine revs rise and stay high while the speed catches up, which sounds like a drone. Hyundai and Kia call their version IVT.
