A CVT uses a belt or chain between two pulleys that change size. An e-CVT, used in Toyota's strong hybrids, has no belt: a planetary gear set splits the petrol engine's power between the wheels and making electricity, and with two electric motors that gives the stepless feel. Both feel smooth; the e-CVT is part of the hybrid system and is not a separate gearbox choice.
