ESC compares where you are steering with where the car is actually going, many times a second. If the car starts to skid or slide, it cuts engine power and brakes individual wheels to bring it back in line. Brands call it ESC, ESP, VSC, VDC, VSM or DSC; it is the same function.
It is one of the most effective safety systems on a car, and Bharat NCAP requires it for a rating of 3 stars or more.
