The octane number, given as RON in India, measures how well petrol resists igniting too early under compression, which causes knocking. It is not a measure of energy or power: a higher number helps only an engine whose handbook asks for it. Since April 2026 regular E20 petrol must be at least 95 RON, so most cars gain nothing from 95-octane premium grades.
