In a part-time 4WD you drive in 2H (two-wheel drive) on normal roads and switch to 4H or 4L only on loose or slippery ground, because the front and rear axles are locked together and would strain on grippy tarmac. A full-time 4WD has a centre differential, so it can stay in four-wheel drive on any surface.
