All-wheel drive (AWD)

All-wheel drive sends power to all four wheels. In most cars on sale it works automatically, often running mainly on one axle and sending power to the other when a wheel slips, with no lever to pull and no low-range gearing; some systems drive all four wheels all the time. Electric AWD cars do it with a motor on each axle.

Good for grip on wet roads, gravel and snow; for serious off-road use look for 4WD with low range.
