Gross capacity is everything the battery pack holds; usable, or net, capacity is the part the car lets you use, with a buffer kept back to protect the cells. Brochures do not always say which figure they quote: BMW's India launch gave the iX's battery as 111.5 kWh, and its US release shows that is the gross figure, with about 105 kWh usable.
