DPF (diesel particulate filter)

A DPF is a filter in a diesel car's exhaust that traps soot. The car burns the soot off by itself when the exhaust is hot enough, which needs regular longer drives at a steady speed; repeated short trips or long spells of slow driving can leave soot in the filter and bring on a warning light. Kia's Seltos manual, for example, clears it with about 25 minutes above 60 km/h.

If most of your driving is short city runs, weigh this before choosing a diesel.
