A diesel engine ignites its fuel by squeezing air until it is hot, with no spark plug. Diesels pull strongly at low speed and give good mileage on long highway runs, but cost more to buy, and modern BS6 diesels need a particulate filter and often AdBlue, which suit regular long drives better than short city trips.
