kWh measures energy, how much is stored; kW measures power, how fast it flows. An EV's battery is sized in kWh, like the size of a fuel tank, and its charging speed and motor output are given in kW, like the flow rate of a pump. A 40 kWh battery on a 7.2 kW charger takes a little over five and a half hours from empty to full in theory, and longer in practice because of losses and slower charging near full.
